Does lighter skin wrinkle more than darker skin tones?



The belief by many is that the darker your skin, the longer time it will be before you show signs of lines and wrinkles. Is this a myth or is there science behind the statement?

Harvard Medical School conducted a study of 350 women from four different ethnic groups with participants ranging in age from their 20’s to 70’s. Their findings won’t surprise you. “Women of African-American background aged slower than women of Caucasian background as far as skin appearance was concerned,” says Olay principal scientist, Dr. Frank Neuser. “In fact, the aging process seemed to be slowed down by about 10 years.”

On the surface, darker skin tones have a more eumelanin, pigment that makes your skin darker, which is more effective in protecting against harmful ultraviolet ray damage. This suggests that the SPF of very dark skin may be naturally higher than Caucasian skin. However, this information is not meant to dictate that darker skin tones do not exhibit visible signs of aging.

We need to realize there are many other factors to take into consideration that contribute towards wrinkle development. Ultraviolet light, gravity, genetics and overall daily habits play a major role in premature wrinkling. It is suggested that healthy routines will help with the prevention of visible signs of aging. So. Let’s not forget several important steps that should be included in your health skin care routine. Cleanse and exfoliate your skin. Moisturize your skin. Wear sunscreen, year round.
